Motivation behind Project “Pointer”
Our municipality, being the cutting edge of the governance, also a massive estate owner and an enforcement agency, the range of services it offers is very vast as it includes sanitation, public conveniences, solid waste management, cleanliness of roads and public areas, water supply and sewerage, maintenance of roads, street lighting, road signage, street fittings, parking facilities, subways, basic healthcare services, prevention of communicable diseases, parks and gardens etc. Most of our problems and grievances centre round the problem of maintenance of these services.

We usually face problems with public agencies that operate without much concern about the quality of services they provide. We, therefore, have to be watchful and strong in asserting our rights for improving these services. There has to be a pressure on these public agencies for improving the quality of their work. A weak civil society encourages those in authority to develop a laidback attitude because they know that the citizens would bear with them since there are no other alternatives. But, of course, there are alternatives. We must solve our problems by building a strong civil society where we will not behave as if we are helpless spectators. Bearing that in mind we have initiated activities for creating awareness about our rights for getting our problems solved and our grievances redressed.

In brief, the weaknesses of our civil society have unwittingly delayed and stifled the development of standards and norms of conduct that are essential for the proper design and efficient delivery of public services. As a result, when the state fails to deliver, there is no one else to mobilise the people and demand new standards of conduct and performance.

When a majority of our people is poorly informed about their responsibilities and unable to assert their rights, there will be serious constraints on our ability to act as responsible citizens. This is one reason that our public services are not as per standards or lack in responsiveness.

The objective of our initiative is to bring about a qualitative improvement in the present dismal scenario of poor and inefficient of service delivery system that the public agencies provide. We shall take up your complaints with appropriate authorities and put pressure on them for taking appropriate remedial actions. We have established contacts with relevant authorities and shall follow up the cases that you would bring to our notice and shall keep you informed about the progress made.

It would be very useful to have your suggestions for improving the existing system of service delivery system of various public agencies. Let us come together for building a strong civil society for improving the quality of our lives.
